Pagosa, day 1

We took a hike around the 300 acre ranch...
And saw an elk cow...
Then we went fishing! Violet caught her first fish ever! Pretty impressive catch. I love that the fish is smiling. :)
Riley learned how to hook a worm and cast his line too...
And we enjoyed the view of Ron and Lynne's private lake.

More soon... I hope! :) This took about an hour to upload so I don't think Rick is happy with me right now. haha.

Traveling to Pagosa pictures...

Crazy creepy stop on an Indian reservation... see the dude on the tricycle? Yep. He was riding down the freeway near us. I wonder where he was going?
Four Corners... Violet has fulfilled her wish of doing a backbend in all four states at once.
With a reward of a yummy sno-cone, she was thrilled (so was Riley). It was about 105 degrees there, so the treat was definitely welcome.
Here are our feet in four states.
And Riley's souvenir. Tinty, wait till you hear him play! He's a natural :)

Zion pictures

Here's the pics from the first leg of our trip! YAY!

Riley is a Rock Star!!
We climbed up to these cool rocks... in flip flops! awesome.
See our little car down below?
Oh... here it is! :)

Pagosa, day 2

Alas... no photos again today. Hopefully I paint an adequate picture with words.

We slept in the Elk Room at Ron and Lynne’s house. It’s a beautiful room with a queen bed, sitting area, private bathroom, walk-in closet, and balcony with unbelievable views. The kids slept in the office area just outside our room in the fold-out bed. They could have stayed in the room with us, but they wanted their own place… of course sometime during the night both of them ended up in our bed. I have a feeling the coyotes outside woke them up and they may have been a little scared. We shooed them back into bed where they slept in until about 6 am.

Ron and his son Noah went out fishing at that time – Riley wanted to go with them but Ron told Riley he couldn’t go because he wasn’t dressed yet. Lynne made Riley and Violet some Lucky Charms cereal (must be vacation! Yesterday was fruit loops and today is lucky charms!), which made them forget all about fishing for a few minutes.

The kids woke us up just before 7 am… the sun, filtered by the aspens and pine trees, was streaming in the window and I was once again awestruck by the incredible scene that God painted outside just for me. My nose was greeted by the scent of brewing coffee and I came downstairs and poured myself a cup of the Seattle’s Best Crème Brulee coffee that Lynne had made. No sweetener needed – it was brewed perfectly with just a hint of sweetness in the beans. I toasted a bagel and drank in the view along with my coffee. An elk mama and baby were drinking from one of the little ponds in the meadow down below, and in another open glen horses grazed lazily. Birds sang softly from the trees surrounding the house and only the occasional howl of a coyote sounded out of place in the wilderness. I was totally at peace here, my eyes following the tree lines as they wound their way up and around the surrounding hills. I am just not used to trees… especially ones like these. Aspens with trunks a foot in diameter, that seemed to touch the clouds with their tops… Majestic pines in shades of green and blue-grey and silvery sage… Flowers of all kinds growing wild around me – yellow sunflowers, daisies, lavender…and lush, green meadows that looked like waves rippling in the breeze. And the sky…. the sky that is bluer than I could have imagined – a deep, rich blue that lightened to almost a porcelain color at the horizon… dotted with the occasional billowy white cloud – clouds that have the potential for creating some good thunderstorms later in the day. I hope so!

After getting dressed, we headed into town for a bit – Rick and the kids went to the park by the riverside while Lynne and I went to a couple of shops so she could return a table she had bought. Ron had a meeting in town, so it was a perfect time to go for a quick little trip. The shops are so cute (and sooo Pagosa). I can’t wait to go back when we have more time for browsing.

Lynne and I met the kids and Rick at the park – Riley was making himself busy by the river, squatting next to the bank and making a mud pile with some rocks and sticks. Violet emerged barefoot from the trees by the river, her jeans soaked almost to her knees. She had been trying to skip rocks across the water. Across the playground of the park, a local church was having Vacation Bible School with kids in three age groups – 5 and 6, 7 and 8, and 9 and 10 years old. It just started today and one of the counselors said that if Violet and Riley wanted to come for the rest of the week they totally could. The best part? It’s free! The theme was perfect, too… “God’s Great Big Backyard” – I love it!

After the park we all headed to the Malt Shoppe – an old fashioned place with the best shakes and malts around. Rick and Violet had chocolate, Riley had strawberry, and I had black raspberry. They were a perfect late morning treat.

We drove back to the house after that for a little chill time – Rick and I played scrabble while the kids played and read quietly. Then we noticed the clouds were really darkening in the western sky, so we decided to head down to the little picnic area on the property and get it cleaned out before the storm hit. Rick, Ron, the kids, and I drove down with shovels, rakes, and brooms and set to work clearing out the little three-sided log cabin. We had to pull out the picnic tables and tarps, the chairs and the trash, and we swept out the leaves and the dirt and the mess. The kids were great helpers, bagging the trash and gathering firewood while Ron used his Magic Lighter Fluid to start a fire in the fireplace. Perfect timing too – within a minute of lighting the fire, the wind kicked up something fierce and we watched the storm roll in around us. First it was just wind, then we heard thunder, and then finally the rain started to fall. At first it was just a light drizzle – and we got to see a deer crossing the meadow on her way to the forest – and then the rain picked up and started pounding pretty hard.

When there was a little break in the weather, we got in the car and came back to the house to wait out the storm. Rick and I finished our Scrabble game (yes, I won) and Violet read a book. Then Riley and Rick took a nap and I tried to get online. No luck yet getting the Internet to work for posting photos, but hopefully tonight I will at least be able to post this blog I have been writing. We’ll see…

After naps we headed down to Noah’s lake to go fishing. We took the kids’ fishing poles we bought a couple years ago as well as some live worms Ron had picked up in town earlier. We had forgotten our bobbers so the first half hour of fishing didn’t work so well… but then Ron showed up and brought bobbers and some really cool floating bait. Rick took the kids one at a time out in the little rowboat while I stayed on shore with the other one, fishing from the side. Ron had a couple of bites with his lure but the fish kept breaking free. Finally, though, when Violet was out on the boat with Ron she got a bite! And it was a BIG ONE! So big, in fact, that the $10 pole from Target couldn’t actually handle it and they had to reel it in by hand. It was a beautiful rainbow trout – and they brought it ashore so we could look at it (and take pictures!) and then we let the big guy go back home to his family.

As we drove back from our fishing fun, we spotted EIGHT BUCKS right on the side of the road – we drove right past them! They had velvety horns and they looked so majestic! It was incredible…and I can’t believe how close we were!

We had a wonderful dinner of grilled brats and burgers and fruit salad, and then spent the rest of the evening in the hot tub outside looking at the stars. It was awesome. We saw a bunch of satellites and pointed out some constellations to the kids. I couldn’t believe how many stars we saw. One more thing that makes this place utterly incredible.

The kids are asleep and Rick is reading his book next to me. Time for me to get to bed too… after I convince the Internet service her to love me long enough to publish this blog…

Awesomeness... and not so much.

Awesomeness...

Our drive through beautiful countryside.
Visiting Four Corners with the kiddos.
Listening to Angels & Demons (ooooooooo it is getting SERIOUSLY GOOD) on CD.
Watching a storm brew over the mountains while we drove.
Stopping at McDonalds for lunch and to stretch our legs... and eating a sundae while the kids played in the playground area.
Meeting Ron in Pagosa.
Remembering Pagosa.
Driving to Ron and Lynne's incredibly amazing house.
Our new car with AWD to get up Ron's steep driveway.
Ron and Lynne's super cute Golden pups (Jake & Ellie)
The freaking AMAZING house they live in... I am pretty sure it's Shontell's dream home.
The views. From every. single. window.
Hiking around the property... to lakes and streams and meadows.
The Elk cow that came right up to us to say hi.
Dinner (homemade mac & cheese - Riley was in HEAVEN!)
Noah letting the kids play Nintendo 64 with him.
Did I mention the amazing house???
The sunset. Ohhhh the sunset.
The awesome photos I have taken of the trip so far.

Not so much...
The internet connection here is pretty sporadic, meaning if I can actually publish this blog it will be pretty much a miracle at this point. This means I can't add any photos, though, cause it would take too much time to load them. Sigh.

So. YOU JUST WAIT. Another day, apparently. ha!

Is life a highway?

Are we going to drive it - all night long?

Actually, no. We are going to stop in Page, AZ for a little break on our road trip!

Yes, folks, we are on vacation (or as Rick likes to call it, "vaction"). This year we are taking a road trip to Pagosa Springs, Colorado to visit some family friends and enjoy the great outdoors and have fun and simply RELAX. Which Rick and I desperately need to do. We have both been pushing ourselves to exhaustion the past few weeks and it has definitely taken its toll on us. Lots of nights of very little sleep and lots of days of long work hours. And of course, the kids are out of school which means we have to figure out ways to entertain them. I do have some great photos of recent entertainment, such as golf lessons with their great grandpa and pool time with Tinty and Luke, but those photos are on the home computer (I am typing from Rick's laptop), so those will have to wait till next weekend.

So, vacation techincally started last night, when we were greeted with a broken downstairs A/C unit. And on a Friday afternoon the day before we leave to go out of town there isn't a whole heck of a lot we can do. We cranked up our swamp cooler and are hoping for the best. At least the upstairs unit is still working fine (good thing for the girls who are dog-sitting for us!). And of course we realized the A/C was broken about 15 minutes before we were having guests over for Poker Night. Good thing they have a sense of humor cause as you can imagine I was seriously fweeking out.

Our plan was to leave this morning at 10 or 11 am... but I still had work to finish up before going and Rick was messing with the A/C (which we never did get to work... sigh!), and of course there was the obligatory notes for the house and dog-sitters to write, and the packing of the car, tetris-style, with our luggage, camping gear, and misc travel food (cheez-its and chocolate hostess donettes, of course!).

OH YEAH!

The car. Speaking of the car... (The Ford Expedition is still for sale! Tell your friends! I am willing to pay a finder's fee of a free photo shoot!!)

WE GOT A NEW VEHICLE!
Well. Technically not new. But newer than we actually have ever had before! It is so cute and sooo fun and sooooooo happy and SO COMPLETELY exactly what I wanted! It's my car and I love it. It's a 2006 Honda Element and ever since I saw my very first Element on the road I wanted one for myself. Of course, had it been my choice and a new vehicle that I built myself, it would have been lime green instead of raspberry red. But other than that everything (everything) that I wanted to have included in the vehicle is in this one. Sunroof, MP3 jack, cruise control, sound controls on the steering wheel, compartments and pockets everywhere, roof rack, rear fold-up seats... you name it, it's on here. And with Rick's new TomTom GPS, it's the whole package. I still need to name the car. I am thinking Intern George. HA. Riley wants to call it "Surprise" - as in the "element of surprise."

So. This car is freaking RAD and fits everything. Of course that means that the kids EACH packed two (TWO) backpacks of toys and crap they *had to take* on the trip. Riley's bags included a baseball bat (no ball though), lightsaber, gameboy, TWO teddy bears, and thirteen different books. Violet's had another 15 books, her Polly Pockets, her baby doll, her baby Pluto doll, her PHONE (!!!!!) - this is not a small phone either. This is like an old fashioned desktop phone. FULL SIZE! - her ipod, her Nintendo DS, ALLLLLL her games, her camera, her video camera, and a few more things. I pared it down to one bag for the both of them. They have their gameboy and DS, ipod, and cameras. Each got 2 books (and Violet got to bring 2 bonus chapter books) and one stuffed animal. No phone (cause. SERIOUSLY. WHAT. what do I do with that?).

We loaded it up and we finally hit the road at 2 pm. Nothing like being on time... ;)

The GPS was great - we mapped out our itinerary to Page (with stops in Mesquite for potty breaks and a quick trip to Wal-Mart and another stop at Zion National Park). And of course we had our book on tape. Finally I would get to listen to Angels and Demons! Woohoo! After a bit of a slow start (and another trip home because RICK FORGOT HIS JACKET), we were off (for reals this time). I took a little nap for the first 45 minutes or so while Rick drove. We made our pitstop in Mesquite so Rick and I could get Riley's surprise half-birthday present (his own DS since his gameboy is on its last legs). He will get it before the trip is over... :)

Next we drove through Zion. What an amazing place! We didn't get to go to all the cool trailheads (you have to take a shuttle for that), but we still got to drive through and stop and check out some cool sites. We even did a little hiking! The kids loved the cool sandstone rocks and I was actually quite surprised at how much it reminded me of Red Rock Canyon (but on a much larger scale) and how I really need to appreciate what I have taken for granted for so long.

Finally, after 6 hours on the road, we made it to Page. Our hotel here is soooooo ghetto. Which is funny, because I picked it based on the really great reviews it got. So if this is the best Page has to offer, let me just say it: YIKES. At least the pool was kind of fun for the kids (but really, what pool is *not* fun for kids?). I'll let you know tomorrow how the "Continental Breakfast" is...

Right now Rick is sleeping in the bed next to me and the kids are asleep in the other bed. I know I have to do at least one driving shift tomorrow, so I should probably try and get a good night's rest. I left the camera cable in the car so I can't share photos yet, but I will tomorrow (maybe right from the road!).

We are about 1/3 of the way through Angels and Demons and it's really good. I am sad the CDs are in the car and I can't listen to them right now. As it stands, I am sure I will be dreaming of proton accelerators and dismembered eyeballs tonight, so maybe it's good I am not listening to more right before bed.

PHOTOS and more vacation journaling to come tomorrow!

First and Last

August 26, 2007... the first day of school.
June 4, 2007... the last day of school.

The kids are so excited about summer vacation! And we have big, fun plans! A family trip to Colorado for a week in June and another trip to Michigan for a week in August! We can't wait! Right now we are enjoying our summer membership at the YMCA so the kids can play and play and play in the pool. And I am desperately trying to find some fun activities to keep them occupied. Right now I am working on little activity buckets for them... I am pulling out some of my old school supplies and math manipulatives and letting them have fun with those. YAY SUMMER!!

Oh and speaking of summer, I got a new "do!"

LAST DAY OF SCHOOL!

Let's jump for joy!!

I will post first day/last day pics after I take them... haha

ALSO... quick update on the house (and a promise of more photos to come!)... Floors are DONE! I am so proud of Rick. They really look great. Now I want to rip out the carpet everywhere! HA! We got our baseboards and crown moulding installed by a professional - this guy is phenomenal. He will be done tomorrow morning and it looks AMAZING. The crown moulding just frames the whole downstairs just perfectly. I can't believe we lived for so long without it! AND... we are finally (FINALLY) getting shutters installed in the front room and the back slider. I can't believe we have been in here for over 2 years without window coverings in the front rooms! This will also really help us out in our power bill.

Pics will be forthcoming! Can't wait to show you all the finished house :)

When I am 85

I want to sit on a rocking chair on my front porch, smoking cigars with Melissa while we wear our flowery hats and mutter under our breath about "kids these days"...

Also I want to go to Lawry's for dinner on my 85th birthday with my family... and order a martini.
And eat bread with an entire slab of butter on it.
And have a special flower arrangement delivered to my table from my daughter who lives across the country.
And drink great wine and enjoy a wonderful time.

Happy 85 years, Abu! It was a joy to spend your birthday evening with you. :)

Diagnosis...

Violet's been diagnosed with severe childhood migraines and has an MRI scheduled for as soon as my insurance will allow it (which is in 7-10 days). After that we should know more, but the doc is pretty confident it's just this and that she will eventually grow out of them. He gave us some migraine-specific medicine that she can take at the onset of the episode (which, thankfully, she had at the office so he could see exactly what he is dealing with), and it usually takes effect within 15 minutes, which is exactly what happened with Violet. So things are looking good for her! Thanks for your prayers. She is feeling much better this afternoon.

My mini-me and her Migraines

My very own mini-me is home sick today with a migraine that hit her head like a whack from a baseball bat after church last night. One moment she was fine and the very next she was crying in pain from the headache, which even caused her to throw up in the car (note to Rick... grocery bags in the glove box are always a good idea for whenever you might need to hold stuff you don't want actually *in* the car) on the way home. She fell asleep pretty hard and fast after that (well after stopping at the gas station to wash my jacket, which we used as a barf bag, and her jeans, which caught the drips from my non-waterproof jacket, and the car, which caught the rest).
But this morning when she woke up, she still has a headache. So I am going to use the referral paperwork I got from the pediatrician and I'm going to see if I can get her into the pediatric neurologist today. If you get a chance, say a little prayer for my girl. I want her silly personality back. Well you can also pray that her attitude stays away. ;)

It Kit Day!

As many of you know, I still work in the scrapbooking industry, a little... I had to keep myself involved somehow, so I joined the design team of the Fantastic Kit Club called It Kit Studio. If you don't know what scrapbooking kit clubs are, you are in for a treat! You join the club and every month you get a special box delivered to your door that is full of scrapbooking goodness! June's kit is special for a couple different reasons. First, it celebrates The ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY of It Kit Studio! And, second, it features a Very Special Exclusive Stamp... designed by Yours Truly!! You can see the stamp on the project below (which I made using all the goodies in the June kit!).

See that cute little row of houses? That's my stamp! It just makes me smile all over!
This album is going to tell the story of our home improvement project, from start to finish.
It begins with the "before" picture - of our house on the day we bought it...
And pictures and details of what the house looked like when we toured it before we moved in. It's interesting to look at the style of the previous owner and just how NOT like ours it was...
The rest of the album is going to include photos of our home after we moved in, during our various remodeling efforts, and (hopefully soon!) the finished house! YAY!

So, anyway, to celebrate the One Year Anniversary of It Kit, Kelly (the owner) is giving away a FREE kit to a random commenter on her blog. So head over there and post a comment! Or check out the main site and the gallery and be inspired! :) Happy It Kit Day!

Our first ever trip to the ER

I have been a mom for nearly eight years... and I have never had to go to the ER for my kids. Until a couple of weeks ago. No broken bones or anything like that, thank goodness... but it was, of course, a weekend and the pediatrician's office was closed. Violet was complaining of a headache. Not your normal, everyday one, though. All the symptoms of a migraine... sensitivity to light and sound, strong, localized pain, and vomiting. She has had migraines twice before in her life, and usually we just let her sleep them off. Well, this time, for whatever reason, she wasn't able to sleep it off. She woke up in more pain than before. I tried to give her medicine but she would throw it up within 10 minutes.

I called the nurse hotline and said I was planning on taking her to Quick Care. They told me to just take her to the ER. Ack! So Rick took her to the new ER at the brand new hospital that just opened up down the street. I guess not that many people know about it because when we went in there, it was EMPTY. We got into triage immediately and soon Violet was in her very own room, complete with her own adjustable bed, TV remote with cool built-in speaker, and jammies with a butt flap in the back.

The docs tested her for a bunch of stuff and stuck some needles into her to draw blood and give her fluids, since she hadn't eaten all day. She was SO BRAVE (always has been) and didn't even flinch, much less cry, when they inserted her IV.

After just a bit of fluids and pain meds (can you believe they gave her MORPHINE for the headache?!!?), she was MUCH better. They did a strep test and that came back positive - so she had strep. And apparently one side effect can be migraine-like headaches! Who knew?

We had to stay in the room for a few hours waiting for the various tests and fluids and everything to be done... and after her diagnosis they gave her some IV antibiotics to kick her into gear. And finally, she ahd to go to the bathroom... so we walked to the potty with her little bootie peeking through her ER jammies...
And then back in bed till they let us out. We arrived at 5 pm and it was just after 10 pm when we left. You can tell she was ready to go... she really started goofing off at the end.
DO NOT DRINK THE URINE SAMPLE!!!!
It's not my-in... must be URINE! HAHAHAHA

Violet's reward for being a good girl was a cheeseburger happy meal from McDonald's. Thank goodness for 24 hour drive thru's!! :)

So our first (and hopefully, last) trip to the ER was pretty decent. And Violet was pretty much all better by the time we left. A week of antibiotics and she was completely fine. YAY for modern medicine!!

Home Improvement Update

Of course everything's not done.

Stop asking!

But I did want to update on the current state of our Never Ending Home Improvement Project...

First, our Guest Bath.

Here are the Before Pictures:

And here are the AFTER pictures. We replaced the light fixtures, removed the old sink and vanity, added the new sink and faucet and installed the plumbing ourselves (with a little help from Riley), installed the new mirror and shelf, and built two cabinets. And of course there's the floors and baseboards. We are still waiting on the crown moulding, which is waaaay harder to install than I imagined.

The tall cabinet up there was a serious pain in the butt to put together! Never, never, never order furniture from the Home Decorators Collection catalog, like we did. It wasn't worth the good price. It didn't come with any instructions and when they finally sent the instructions they were completely wrong and useless. None of the pieces were labeled properly and there weren't enough screws and bolts. Finally, after ditching the instructions entirely and figuring it out myself, I got it put together... and then two days later the paint started flaking off the knobs!!! WHAT THE HECK!?!?! Anyway. Stay farrrrr away.
I really love our rad sink... from Lowe's. AWESOME. And the faucet, which Riley chose ;)

The cabinet we got from Bed Bath and Beyond. Night and day from the other one. Easy to put together, clear and concise instructions, and it's really cute and sturdy.

I even got a new medicine cabinet. That was a little tricky to install because the opening for the old one was about an inch too short so we had to remove a stud in the wall. Not a big deal when you have the right tools, but of course we didn't. So it took 98 times longer than it should have. But I love how the medicine cabinet ties in everything so nicely :)

Here's the update on the wood floors... my lovely kitchen! Still needs baseboards but I love love love them.

And the entryway...
Next we are doing the downstairs guest bedroom... carpet is gone, we just have to remove the padding and the tack strip.
Here's the wood we still have to install.
And the last room we will be doing - the living room. Right now it's a catch-all for all the other crap from the rooms in progress. Hopefully this weekend we will finish the guest room adn most of this stuff can go in there so this room can get started.

And there you have it! Home Improvement Central!!

Intervention!

So.

Remember when I am a bad listener to God?
Cause Christians annoy me and I don't want to be annoying like Christians?
Even though I want to be a good Christian, just not an annoying one?

Right.

And remember how there are a LOT of people that annoy me?

Right.

So. Anyway.
Last weekend was our church's 20th annual Women's Retreat. I have been to many previous ones (not all 20... more like 6) and I have always enjoyed them, even if they do get to be a little girly and flowery and pink and lots of crying (SO HARD) by people around me... well. You get my picture. Usually I am dragged, kicking and screaming, to retreat by my friend Melissa. She convinces me it will be great because she is there (and she is always right!)... and always, when I get there, I have a wonderful time because I am away from my family for a weekend and I am with my friends and sometimes I even listen to what God has for me.
Sometimes.
Usually I am just doodling on my notebook and cracking jokes with my friends. Cause I am not a listener to God.

Well.
Apparently God was fed up with this practice so He staged an INTERVENTION.
He decided that since I wasn't bothering to listen to Him, that He would use my friends to speak to me.

It started a couple weeks ago when I wasn't planning on going to Retreat. I had scheduled two separate photo shoots that weekend and I just couldn't change it up. But then two weeks ago the Saturday session got cancelled and the Friday session got rescheduled to Thursday. But of course, I still wasn't interested in listening to God who was telling me to GO TO RETREAT, because they were probably full by now since it was so last minute. That night I got an email from the Women's Ministry saying there were 5 spots left. Of course, that didn't mean anything, right??? Sigh. I knew I was fooling myself but I just didn't want to go. Cause there would be WOMEN who were GIRLY and FLOWERY and CRYING and stuff.

So then randomly that same night JeneneBoardman and I were talking online about Ikea and stuff. She wanted to go and so did I... and then she asked me the question:
"Wait! Is there an IKEA near Retreat? When's Retreat? Maybe we can go and go to IKEA the same weekend?"
This coming from the friend who hasn't been to my church in 2 years. Oh and there's an IKEA right on the way to Retreat. So I decided that Jenene probably needs Retreat. And I need IKEA, so I will go with her. Cause I am an athletic supporter.

So I signed us up and we were goin'! I sent Joelle a message saying I was going and she cried cause she had been praying for me to go. Then I told Erin that I was going because Erin was saying before that she wasn't going and that was when I found out that she had signed up the Sunday before. Then SHONTELL from Reno sent me a message saying she was trying to go.
NOW that meant it was gonna be a party! And I was excited about Retreat, even if it meant not having Mel there.

The week before Retreat, for me, was full of STRESS. And Irritation. I am pretty sure I uttered the words "I HATE EVERYBODY" more than once. Lots of crap and stuff going on. I was glad to know I was leaving for the weekend.

So we drove down there, got Shontell from the airport and we went to Ikea. I bought a crapload of stuff there, including the slipcover I had bought for my sofabed last year... only last year the one I bought turned out to be the wrong size. So I had brought it back to exchange it for the correct size. I met with the Lady Who Was In Charge Of Returns. I told her my issue - that I had bought this cover last summer when I was at my annual Trip to IKEA - and when I got home I realized it was the wrong size. And I just would like to do an exchange for the right size. That's all.
And she said NO. Because apparently the policy if IKEA is that you can return stuff... unopened... within 90 days... with a receipt. And I had none of that. It was opened, it had been a year, and I had no receipt with me. And SHE. WOULD. NOT. BUDGE. And I got ANGRY. And IRRITATED. And I said to Jenene as we left "I HATE EVERYBODY." Cause I was mad. And My heart was cold and black and frustrated at all the stupid people of the world.

So then we left IKEA and the world was happy again cause I was with my friends. And we stopped by the Ontario airport again and picked up another friend, Wendi, cause SHE got to come last minute, too! YAY!! FRIENDS!! I love them!

We got to Retreat about 10 minutes before the first teaching. And my mind was on my friends who were there. And on Melissa who wasn't there. Even after our teacher, Terry Powell, told us to be sure we were listening to the message for what God has for US and not what we think God is trying to tell OTHER PEOPLE, I was still thinking of my friends. And how much I knew this teaching was meant for them. Because I am not a good listener to God. And then at the end of the night when the prayer team was up there I saw one girl who is young - a senior in high school - on the team. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but she is young and homeschooled and kind of annoying in one of those Annoying Christian kind of ways and I laughed inwardly because I would never ask her for prayer - cause what does she know?

And Worship at Retreat was not the same. Melissa wasn't there so the singing was just not where I wanted it to be. So instead of being a listener to God and entering into Worship I was just annoyed that certain microphones were too loud.

But still it was fun. A fun time with my friends that was great. And Saturday came. And God staged His intervention.

It started after Terry's morning teaching. It began with Shontell. She came up to me and showed me her page of notes. I was proud of her cause mine was mostly doodles. She told me these notes weren't from the teaching. They were what God was telling her to tell me.

Um.
What???

Right.
And for the next 10 minutes Shontell shared with me what God wanted me to hear. Pretty much that I needed to shut up and listen. That it's fine to be funny and joke and be silly, but not at the expense of God's plan for me. So during our Quiet Time for the next hour, Shontell wanted me to actually BE QUIET AND LISTEN TO GOD. So I cried and I said I would listen. And I was grateful for my friend.

Sigh.
I hate Quiet Time. It's boring. And people annoy me.
But I was a listener to Shontell. I got my orange (they gave oranges instead of apples this year) and I found a nice, secluded place on the campus. On my way there I thought I should memorize Psalm 1. I used to have it memorized but I had long since let it be forgotten as stuff Annoying Christians do. But I decided to be obedient and just do it.
So as I sat down in the shade of the tree in the stairwell to the girls' dorms, I opened the envelope that contained the little brochure the ladies gave us with our fruit. It was titled "Under the Shade of the Tree." Well that was coincidental! HA! So I opened it and read what it had to say... just about spending this time reading the Bible and really asking God to speak into your heart. "Is your life so full that there is no time for Christ?" it asked me. (um, kinda). It told me to take this time and pray for God's will... and allow the Breath of Heaven to refresh me and fill me, while drinking in God's word. There were a few verses in the brochure for those that needed direction, but I knew that I would read and memorize Psalm 1. And as I finished reading the brochure I turned it over.

Psalm 1:1-3 was printed on the back.

So I read it and memorized it.
"Blessed is the man
who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked
Or stand in the way of sinners
Or sit in the seat of mockers
But his delight is in the law of the Lord,
and on His law he meditates day and night.
He is like a tree, planted by streams of water
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither.
Whatever he does prospers."

And after that I did some more reading in my Study Bible, which gives me lots of references all over the place... I read in Proverbs and Job and took some time to really listen to God. And then I was hungry - it was almost lunchtime and quiet time was almost over. So I peeled my orange - it looked and smelled SO GOOD! And when I broke it open, it was BLACK on the inside. A whole section of it was moldy and gross and nasty.

I couldn't eat it. I was annoyed and I told God that had better not be some metaphor for me.

So I got up and walked. I saw Erin on the other side of the lake so I thought I would see if she wanted to go to lunch. I passed by Deidre who asked if I enjoyed quiet time and how was my orange. I told her it was black and moldy which I was sure was not a message from God. And we laughed. I got to Erin and said Hi to her.

She was a little startled to see me, because she had just been reading her Bible and God was telling her to share what she was reading with me. And she was worried that I would be offended because it was a little harsh. And Erin has a teeeny little issue with confrontation, so I am pretty sure at this moment she was breaking out in a cold sweat. But I told her she could share it with me. And it was totally God speaking to me, telling me that my words can be damaging as much as they can be good. And that I have to be careful because sometimes people don't understand my point of view and my sense of humor and they could be hurt by what I say, even if it's not my intention. And that I need to stop speaking and just take some time to listen.
So I cried and I listened and I was grateful for my friend. Again.

That night I really decided I needed to be a listener to God. Since He was telling me to be a listener and all. So I left dinner early to prepare myself to actually take part in Worship and not be annoyed that half the Worship Team sung off-key. I also wanted to get in there a little early so I could at least be on the side of the room where I wouldn't have to hear the worst of the offenders up on stage. And then The Worst Singer Ever sat right behind me. Right behind me. I kind of laughed because I think that God has a sense of humor like that and He put her there. So I decided I needed to just go with it and really enter into worship. So I stepped forward and knelt on the ground near the stage - partly to not hear annoying singers but mostly because I was ready. Ready to surrender to God's will. And as I was there, a member of the Prayer Team knelt down next to me, anointed me with oil and prayed over me a wonderful, heartfelt prayer. And if you guess it was Annoying Homeschooled Teenager from Last Night you get ten points! And I was humbled, yet again, by the way God uses people to speak to me. Even the ones that annoy me.

What I didn't realize is just how true that last sentence would be.
Because there is a woman who goes to my church who annoys me. A LOT. She is one of the Women's Ministry leaders and has been forever. She is around my mom's age and totally acts like a mom, in the annoying way, to me and people I know. I don't like listening to her because she bugs me. Not cause she's trying to bug me. She's harmless enough, but she's just one of those people who are Rule Followers and just gets under my skin. So of course, she was teaching that night. BECAUSE THAT IS HOW GOD GETS THROUGH TO ME.

And I decided to actually listen. She talked about how there is this parasite vine called the Strangling Fig that grows around a healthy tree and it feeds off the tree, making itself stronger while killing the tree, until all that's left is a tree skeleton and this Strangling Fig that looks just like a tree but it's not. And I hoped I wasn't a strangling fig with no tree inside me.

Then she talked about fruit. And how trees are known by the fruit they produce. Apple trees, orange trees, peach trees... they are all known by their FRUIT. And then she said the thing that stabbed me right in my Strangling Fig Heart. She said, "Does the fruit you produce in your life look fine from the outside, but when you open it is it rotten and black?"

STAB.
STAB.
STAB.

She then said "When I get stressed out, I produce bad fruit. I get a short temper and critical with people." And that was when I realized that when she said "When I get stressed out" what God was saying was "When YOU get stressed out." And the rest of the night God was speaking through the One Person in Church that Irritated Me Most.

And God broke me.
And I cried.
SO HARD.

I took communion and prayed for a changed heart. Deidre came up to me and prayed over me and asked God to remind me that my fruit was not moldy and that I can produce good and wonderful fruit still. And then as I was headed back to my seat, my friend Wendi took me by the hand and told me that she felt very strongly that God wanted her to share a scripture with me. And she did and it was exactly what I needed to hear. And I cried SO HARD again. I had snot and boogers and tears and I ran out of tissues. And it was a good, cathartic cry. And I was thankful for God.

Sunday morning I prayed that God take me back (to the beginning) to when my attitude was different about Him and Christians and sharing. I prayed that I could be like I was back in camp in 1990 when I was filled with the Holy Spirit and I first met Rick and we sang "Awesome God" during the afterglows after each evening session and I felt His presence in my life and I was confident in my future. I wanted that again. So I prayed that God would reveal Himself that way to me. And He did.

Worship was going fine till the sound system went down. And then we had no mics. I didn't have to hear Offkey Singer's voice. The room continued to fill with the song we were singing and when it was done, it was quiet for a moment... then we sang about Coming Back to the Heart of Worship. And it was All About Him. And it was awesome. Then the one instrument that was not attached to a mic, the violin, began playing Amazing Grace. And the room filled with our voices and the violin and the Holy Spirit. And I felt all the stuff I wanted to feel in my heart again. And as that song ended, The One Lady At Church Who Irritated Me But God Used To Speak to Me came up to the front and said that we should sing "Our God is an Awesome God" to finish it out. This is not a song that we sing in church regularly. It had been years since we sang that song. But it was the exact song that I spoke in my prayer to God this morning. And God once again used her to speak confirmation into my life that He was there. AND I CRIED SO HARD.

So retreat was amazing for me.
God staged an intervention and I actually listened. And as I was packing up my car, Joelle came up to me to tell me she was so glad I came... and that God had some things that He wanted her to share with me. So I cried and I said I would listen. And I was grateful for my friend. All of my friends.

Philippians 1:3 says "I thank my God every time I remember you" and I do.
I thank my God every time I remember my friends. I thank my God that He chose to use my friends to speak to me since I was too stubborn to listen to Him on my own. I thank my God that he has the sense of humor that he does to use Just the People Who Would Annoy Me to show me His wisdom. And most of all, I thank God for a renewed sense of purpose in my life.
